3 Business Lessons You Should Never Forget

Business

Owning a business is an amazing, exhilarating thrill ride, full of many ups and downs.  In a lot of ways, your business will become a part of you. You must take care of it, nurture it, and dedicate yourself to making sure it’s healthy and growing.  Because having a business is a lot like raising kids, there are plenty of life lessons that

Lesson #1: People won’t always believe in you

This may be depressing to you.  You’d think that if you started a successful business, everyone in your life will be incredibly happy for you, but it doesn’t happen as much as you think it should.  A lot of the time, your success makes others jealous. They feel like a failure in comparison, even if they have a great thing going for themselves. This is especially true when your success translates to bigger and better toys.

Being successful can bring about struggles in a marriage.  If owning a business is a lot like raising kids, then you know having kids is time consuming and stressful at times.  What happens when you start working late? Or when you must invest gobs of money into your business? A lot of the time, a spouse might not be so understanding.  So, be prepared and make the decision now on what comes first.

Lesson #2: You must put your business first

This ties in directly with lesson one.  To be successful and thrive, all your attention and focus must go into it.  If you don’t, then you’re distracted. Distracted people rarely become the best at something.  That means you’re setting aside time with your family and friends. It means you might have to make budget sacrifices, like deciding not to go on that big vacation this year.

You might have to sacrifice a little time with the wife and kids. It might be rough for awhile, but when the money is flowing, life will be good. You can make up for a little of the time lost. At the same time, don’t completely abandon them, either. You will harm your marriage and be so stressed out on all fronts. You can enjoy life, but you also have to give your business everything you have to make it successful.

Lesson #3: Do what you say you’re going to do

Being a man or woman of your word is crucial to your success. Honor your deals. Don’t look for shortcuts or ways to screw others to get ahead. You need to understand just how important relationships are in business. You will go a long way with a good relationship with your vendors, clients, and customers. In that way, being a person of your word means they can rely on you. They know you’ll always make it work out and that’s always good for business.

On the flip side, if you’re dishonest, it will come back to haunt you. Customers talk to each other. They can either recommend your place or tell a friend to avoid it. Now that we have the internet, you’re one bad Yelp review away from losing business and money. If you can’t honor it, don’t promise it.

Here’s How Socialization Can Fight Stress and Improve Productivity

Life Style , Real life

Humans are social creatures.  Whether we like to admit it, we need the help of others to survive.  From the moment we’re born, our survival is crucial to the efforts of others. The way we grow, develop, and learn are all filtered through the understanding. Interpretations of our family, friends, our world shape our level of stress and productivity.

Even those who tend to lean towards being more independent can attest to needing a helping hand. They, too, need a kind word, a hug or two, advice, time out with friends, a companion, love, and marriage. It’s not just for survival either. Our need for others connects directly to our level of happiness as well.

If you want proof of humans being wired to gain nourishment from social interactions, all you have to do is turn on your computer. The internet’s most popular websites where people spend the majority of their time. They are social networks that allow them to connect with family and friends all over the world.  Services like Skype take networking to the next level by allowing us to have video conversations with anyone.

Outside of the technological realm, the importance of socializing on our health, happiness, and longevity has been studied for decades. “The Roseto Effect” has researchers keeping tabs on a close-knit community of Italian-Americans in Roseto, Pennsylvania. They seem to defy the odds by living longer, healthier lives than average Americans.

The Roseto Effect and Stress

It was over thirty years ago when researchers first became baffled by a phenomenon that defied all medical logic.  The citizens of Roseto had half the heart attack death rate compared to the rest of the United States.  Why was this statistic so baffling to the scientific community that it led to decades of studies?

It wasn’t a proper diet or lifestyle you’d see any different in any other blue-collared American town.  The men of Roseto smoked like chimneys and drank wine freely. Their diets were full of modernized Italian cuisine, eaten in large quantities.  What was so different about the people of Roseto, Pennsylvania that garnered researchers and scientists alike to pay attention?

Socialization.  Networking. Neighborliness on a scale large enough to make Mr. Rodgers smile.  Roseto was a close-knit community of people who embodied the American dream. They feasted together, celebrated together, came together to help out when a neighbor was in need.  The elderly aren’t sent away, but taken care of as each home has three generations living under the same roof. Together they enjoyed many communal rituals, such as social clubs, evening strolls, and church festivals.  These all somehow combined to bring good health and happiness to the people of Roseto.

Power of the Clan

“The Power of the Clan” is a report on the Roseto Effect. It was conducted by physician Stewart Wolf and sociologist John Bruhn. Their study covered a period of time between 1935 to 1984. It highlighted the fact that when a community bonds together, it actually contributes to the health and wellness of that community.  On the flip side, a lack of concern and disconnection between residents can lead to the opposite effect.

“We looked at the social structure of healthy communities,” Wolf said. “We found that they are characterized by stability and predictability. In those communities, each person has a clearly defined role in the social scheme.”

There’s no doubt that socializing makes us feel good.  Whether it’s waiting in line at the grocery store and talking to the person next to you or being with family and friends, we are stimulate in ways that make us happy.  In fact, it’s detrimental to our emotional well-being.

According to the Gallup-Healthways Happiness-Stress Index study, we are at our happiest when we spend time socializing.  Over 140,000 Americans were surveyed. It found that those who performed the worst on the Happiness-Stress index were at home all day. They had zero hours of social time.  The opposite was true for those who devoted a large amount of time with others. The ratio rose literally with each hour of socialization.

Fighting Stressors

If you’re wondering how this works, it all begins with stress.  When stress levels are high and cortisol rises in the body, it can lead to a rise in blood pressure. It also destabilizes the immune system.  Constant stress leads to all kinds of issues, from heart disease to other illnesses. They seem to find their way into a compromised system.

According to Shelley Taylor, a professor in psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, there is a cure for high stress levels that can ultimately lead to longer, healthier lives.  “(Social contact with others) has effects on the body that are more powerful than cigarette smoking and your cholesterol level,” said Taylor. “The magnitude is very strong.”

This is the answer that baffled researchers many decades before in Roseto.  Socialization is key to our ultimate health. It cuts down on the amount of stress we carry around in our bodies.  Increased socialization impacts our health at the same magnitude smoking does. It’s no wonder the people of Roseto have less heart attack deaths than the rest of the country.

6 Tips for Getting More Life Out of Your Car Battery to Save Money

Saving

When it comes to getting better mileage out of your car battery, it isn’t too different from owning a conventional combustion engine car. Wiser decisions help improve the life and the range of efficiency of your vehicle.  If you drive like a lunatic through the city streets, it’s obvious you’re going to waste through an entire gas tank quicker than if you made better driving decisions.

The same goes with driving an electric car.  You can see just from looking at different models how the maximum range for both city and highway driving are different.  With conventional cars, you might be used to getting more bang for your buck by getting on the interstate and smooth-sailing it to your destination.

The electric car is opposite.  Faster speeds drain the battery quicker, cutting down on the range you’ll get on a single charge.  While we wait for better technology to develop and to give us better overall range, there are a few tips and tricks you can learn to give yourself the best possible efficiency.

Tip# 1: Don’t Accelerate Harshly

One common thread about driving any type of vehicle is to not mash the gas pedal to the floor when trying to accelerate.  Yes, we all have that need for speed and accelerating is the fun part of driving. But whether you drive a gasoline or electric vehicle, acceleration is bad for efficiency.  Instead of being aggressive with your accelerator, just slowly make your way to desired cruising speed to save your battery’s juice.

Tip #2: Climate Control Saps Battery Power

You should already know from driving conventional vehicles that making use of the climate controls, especially the A/C on those hot summer days, can really suck down the fuel.  Except, with electric cars, running either the heat or the cold can put a dent in your battery’s charge. There are a few tricks to help you save your battery.

The first is to take advantage of heated/cooled seating.  Some models of cars come with heated seats as a package and can help keep you warm rather than running the heat.  The second is to warm up or cool down the car while it’s still plugged in to the charger. If you ‘warm up’ the car unplugged, then you’re just wasting more battery power.  Do it while it’s plugged in for better performance.

Tip #3: Maintain Proper Maintenance

Another way electric and conventional cars are similar is performing regular maintenance and upkeep will drastically improve your car’s function.  Small things, like making sure the air intake filter is clean of debris, can make a big difference in overall performance. Schedule regular trips to your mechanic for inspections and to keep an eye on your battery pack.  One of the biggest complaints about electric cars is the life expectancy of the battery. While this issue has largely been corrected with technological advances, you still want to make sure your battery’s charge is strong and up-to-date.

Tip #4: Know Your Numbers

Anyone who has driven for any amount of time knows they must pay attention to all the dials and digits that alert the driver to the health of various systems in the vehicle.  You keep track of the fuel level, oil, temperature, water, and if there’s an error somewhere, you’ll most likely have a barrage of lights that will let you know what’s wrong.

Just like we’ve learned how to take care of combustion engine cars, we will also pick up better driving habits when it comes to electric as well.  You know how you drive and if you actually pay attention to the numbers, you can improve the range of your battery. With a process known as telematics, electric cars will give you the information you need to know so you can monitor your progress, and gives you feedback on ways to improve your charging and driving habits.

Tip #5: Learning to Use Eco-Mode

One of the main features people look for in any car is its performance.  Can it go from zero-to-sixty in under 3 seconds? Does it offer a certain amount of torque?  Researchers have been studying the various effects performance cars has on gas mileage (or in this case, battery life).  Much like the typical combustion engine vehicle, you have several buttons at your disposal that can increase or decrease various performances.

Of course, as you increase performance, it will come at the cost of your battery range.  There are all different types of performance buttons that can help you save juice as well, including “Eco-mode”, which is designed to give you the best possible performance while saving energy.  New technologies have allowed smart cars to know when you’re going downhill to also save on power (available on the 2016 Nissan LEAF).

Tip #6: “Power” Braking

It’s all about the transfer of power.  When you hit the brake pedal, it creates a force of kinetic energy that can be used to reenergize the battery.  Smooth braking puts a premium effort on adding more power to the battery, making your driving style even more important to your maximum range.  If you’re accelerating at a slower, more comfortable pace, then there will be no need to jam on the brakes, giving you better range.

Most of the cars on the road today have a similar design.  The rules for safe and effective driving still apply when driving electric.  You must always be careful not to force it, as good driving habits will extend the life and the range of your battery.  By following these six tips and tricks, you just might get more out of your electric car than what is says on the sticker.

Trump’s Policies Forcing Many Women to Worry About Retirement

Saving

If you had to use one word to describe the Trump administration, that word would be “unpredictable”. Many older Americans are starting to feel the same about their impending retirement.

Trump seems to find enemies at will and won’t hesitate to attack them on Twitter. When the President of the United States goes after someone, the world notices. Stock prices drop. Whole industries have changed their priorities just to stay within his good graces.

While Trump’s policies mean a lot of good things for workers, he’s also come out swinging on spending. He has been working on cutting the benefits the Obama administration gave to college students so they wouldn’t be burdened.

Many have also lamented the proposals that set out to significantly cut other programs too. PBS funding and Meals on Wheels has been on the chopping block.

What cuts are going to come next? No one knows, and that leaves a lot of retirees (especially women) worried about their benefits.

A New Retirement Survey

According to a survey from the Nationwide Retirement Institute, 62% of women near or at retirement age plan to use Social Security in their golden years. 58% of them have a strong belief that Trump will cut their benefits in a push to roll back entitlements.

This is only a small part of the many challenges women face in retirement, especially this generation of women.

The American College of Financial Services recently conducted a survey of their own. They wanted to test the financial literacy of men and women. 80% of the women who took the test failed. Many do not know their options. They rely on their spouse to be the breadwinners and always trusted things were in order.

The problem with that is, women live longer than men. This makes it extremely important that they take better charge over their financial future and understand their options.

Knowing Your Retirement Options

Roberta Eckert, the Vice President of Nationwide Retirement, believes women should understand their options.

“Too many women retirees have no retirement income outside of Social Security. And even for women that do, the fact that they live longer, makes considering maximizing Social Security benefits extremely important,” she said.

The majority of women nearing retirement age believes that Social Security will be enough only adds to their nervousness. Men tend to be investors and have different types of income flows ready. If Social Security is cut, they aren’t ready.

Women have different challenges and need to be even more aggressive about this issue. They should take the time to improve their financial literacy and know all their options. If not, they might end up finding themselves working past retirement age.

The Cost of Weddings Keeps Going Up as Couples Avoid Tradition

Life Style

Your wedding day might be the greatest day of your life, but it’s still only a single day. Don’t get us wrong, we’re not getting preachy about spending. But when you put it into perspective, we spend WAY too much money on it. In fact, the average cost of weddings in the U.S. is $33,931. You can get a 2019 Acura ILX, everything included, for $25,900.

The Knot has released a new survey that found the amount of money people are spending on weddings keeps rising. Another interesting statistic they found is that parents are less likely today to go the traditional route. Usually the parents get together and pay for the big day, but not anymore. More couples are footing the bill and it’s so expensive that they’re leaning on financing options to help pay for it.

One of the worst ways you and your partner can start your life together is by going into debt. This doesn’t include any other of the debt and loans you’ve each accumulated separately. Throw in student loans for a lot of young adults and you’ll end up living in a debt nightmare. This is why more people are putting off things like marriage and having kids.

Weddings by the Numbers

Weddings are becoming so expensive that nearly a third of all the people in the survey said they had to get into debt to help pay for it. The average amount of money they borrowed was $11,737. That’s just what they borrowed, considering that cost of an average wedding is nearly $20,000 more expensive.

Student Loan Hero conducted a survey of their own and found that 74% of couples have already expected they would go into debt to get married. That is a sad statistic. 61% planned to use their credit cards to pay for everything. As couples continue to spare no expense, they really need to think more about their future together than a single day of their lives.

In fact, around half of the money spent on weddings, a paltry $15,439 of it, goes towards the venue alone. It would seen as if a wedding could be made much cheaper by selecting a place that costs a lot less money or even free. Is the venue really worth that much for a single night? In reality, it’s not.

It’s mainly because people are doing away with anything traditional. Fancy wedding spots verses churches. Reception halls and country clubs are on the outs as well.

“Couples are rethinking conventional traditions and putting their own creative spins on long-standing wedding moments, like unity ceremonies and first dances,” says Kristen Maxwell Cooper, editor in chief of The Knot. “Some couples are opting to embrace their cultural heritage, while others choose to pay homage to pop culture that plays a part in their shared story.”

USPS to Get $6.3 Billion for New Delivery Vehicles

Real life

Delivery trucks are an iconic site in the U.S. We always see the small white Grumman LLV trucks on the roads, but that’s about to change. It appears as if new trucks with a slightly different and updated appearance are coming. The next truck will be called the NGDV, or Next Generation Delivery Vehicle. This design and function became the winning bid for new USPS trucks in 2018.

The previous truck was designed to have a 24-year long lifespan and have been made since 1987. The problem with these trucks is they’ve had a lack of amenities and newer technologies. With no air conditions, anti-lock brakes, and other things current vehicles have, driving these monsters has been tough on postal workers. Especially in the heat of summer.

The NGDV won the $6.3 billion contract in which 180,000 new delivery trucks will be built in the next 5-7 years. The main thing the USPS was looking for was value. That ultimately means they want the best truck they could get for as little money as it could cost. Hopefully that doesn’t mean certain features are excluded.

This particular truck will have a few good things about it, like an option to go all-wheel drive if needed in the winter and driving on the right-hand side once again. The type of powertrain wasn’t specified as of yet, but the cargo capacity is 1,500 pounds.

USPS Splitting the Bill

In order to get the new USPS trucks out faster, the agency is looking to potentially splitting the large contract between different manufacturers. Of course, this news hasn’t yet been confirmed. These types of deals are often made private, but there have been multiple prototypes spotted so far this year. This is what’s taking so long. USPS is testing the different types of trucks to see which performs the best for their price.

Other manufacturers were in the running as well. One in particular, AM General, tried to get electric trucks on the roads, but they dropped out. It was obvious the USPS wouldn’t go for the more expensive electric variety, even though it would go a long way in helping to reduce carbon emissions. Hundreds of thousands of mail trucks making their routes daily across the country.

While this is interesting news, we most likely won’t see the rollout of any new trucks for the next several years. The contract isn’t set to start until next year at the earliest. But, if the USPS can get several factories quickly building them, we might get them sooner rather than later.

Betsy DeVos Finally Agrees to Cancel Student Debt from ITT Tech

Credit & Debt

ITT Technical Institute was one of the many colleges that scammed students by making promises it couldn’t, or wouldn’t fulfill. In a fight to cancel student debt, Senator Elizabeth Warren sent a letter to Secretary DeVos asking that she finally cancel the debt of defrauded ITT Tech students. She finally did, adding that she will do it with “extreme displeasure.”

It was back in 2016 when the school officially closed all 136 of their doors for good. There are several other schools forced to do the same. They faced multiple lawsuits and claims of deception, using marketing tactics to bring students in, only to leave them hanging in the end. Still, years later, students of the defunct school are still paying on their loans.

This is why several Democrats, including Warren, decided to send DeVos a letter to ask about when the students would finally have their loans taken care of. The federal government has obviously been dragging its feet on this issue, declaring that the loans would be forgiven around the time the schools closed.

Warren tweeted about the response she got from DeVos: “We got this note back from @BetsyDeVosED. I’m not sure which is better news: that she’s cancelling thousands of ITT Tech students’ loans, or that it gave her “extreme displeasure” to do so.”

Student Debt Causes Havoc

It’s difficult to understand why so many students were continuing to pay on their debt even after the schools closed down. Of course, the government loaned out this money and wanted it back, regardless of what happened to the school. Under the Trump Administration, they’ve taken a different tone on this issue than the left.

They believe it’s the personal responsibility of someone to pay back the loans they take out. If they were defrauded by the school, that isn’t the government’s fault. Yet, taxpayers are on the hook for canceling the student debt. It’s not a debate that’s going away anytime soon. The majority of Democratic candidates running for president have run on a platform of forgiving all (or most) student debt and making college free.

There are many pros and cons to that and it certainly wouldn’t be an easy bill to get passed. The government shouldn’t be in a position to have to cut out the $1.6 trillion students have borrowed over the past few decades. Yet, as the problem continues to get worse, it devastates the lives of those students and harms the economy.

After Receiving Tariff Exemption, Apple to Build Mac Pros in Texas

Technology

Apple is continuing to push its commitment to improving the American workforce. Their goal is to invest hundreds of billions of dollars into the economy by creating American jobs. The plan to create jobs here was curtailed a little bit as a result of the massive tariffs being placed on China. But once Apple received a tariff exemption, three days later they decided that they would start building their new Mac Pro computers in Austin, Texas.

“The Mac Pro is Apple’s most powerful computer ever and we’re proud to be building it in Austin,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “We thank the administration for their support enabling this opportunity.”

As of June, it was reported that the production of the Mac Pro would actually be done in China. Pres. Trump’s tariffs going to hit the company too hard. That would make it difficult for Apple to make a profit and as a result, would have to move production overseas. But even the president was angry at Apple for that decision and said in a tweet:

“Apple will not be given Tariff waiver, or relief, for Mac Pro parts that are made in China. Make them in the USA, no Tariffs!” But once Apple reaffirmed their commitment to make the Mac Pro in Austin, it was finally decided that the US trade representatives would indeed give the company a waiver. Most of the main circuit board parts are indeed made in China.

Apple Believes in the Power of American Workers and Innovation

“We believe deeply in the power of American innovation,” Cook continued. “That’s why every Apple product is designed and engineered in the US, and made up of parts from 36 states, supporting 450,000 jobs with US suppliers, and we’re going to continue growing here.”

This machine is going to be one of the most powerful personal computers ever made. The cost of a Mac Pro is going to be $5,999. This is a bit more than the average American is going to spend on a computer, but usually these types of machines are high-powered for the purposes of video and music production.

They also plan on building a new campus north of Austin. This is a $1 billion investment that will create 5,000 jobs in the immediate future with the opportunity to expand 15,000 workers. Many states are involved in making the different component parts that go into this computer. By increasing American production, Apple is really proving their commitment to invest in America.

Trump stated that during a dinner with Cook, he made a compelling argument that many industries are being hurt by Chinese tariffs. We’ll see if this allows for other industries to receive an exemption in exchange for investment in American jobs.

FAFSA Enrollment Starts Today for the 2020-2021 School Year

Real life

If you’re looking for financial aid help, we have some good news! October 1 is the very first day you can apply for FAFSA benefits. FAFSA stands for Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Many students across the country with low enough income can apply for the FAFSA and receive federal funds to help pay for college. Applying today means that you have this money ready to go by 2020.

This includes any high school senior who is looking for FAFSA money for next school year to start college. This is one of those applications that you should apply for as soon as possible. Many people put it off and it hurts them in the end. This is literally free money that you can apply towards tuition, books, or housing. Many students refrain from applying because they feel that the process takes too long. That’s why filing immediately gets it out of the way and you’ll be set for next year.

“This year, there are 13 states that use the FAFSA that award their grants on a first-come, first-served basis or until the money runs out,” says Mark Kantrowitz, an expert on student financial aid and the publisher of SavingforCollege.com. “The early bird gets the grant.”

When Is the FAFSA Deadline?

The deadline for enrolling isn’t until June 30, 2021. So, you may be wondering why we’re saying it’s important to get it done early. But for many colleges, FAFSA money is first-come, first-serve. There’s only a certain amount of funds that are given out each year. If you’re one of students who apply right away, your odds of receiving this money are much better than someone who waits until the deadline.

Also, your state might have a different deadline. That’s why putting in your application right away is the best course of action. Now let’s take a look at a few pitfalls families run into when applying for FAFSA.

1) They Don’t Apply at All

This is a difficult one. FAFSA is free money! Almost every family in the country qualifies. Yet, many people decided to just take out student loans. Student loans you have to pay back over many years and they also accumulate interest. You don’t have to pay back the FAFSA money you get, so it can really help you in the long run.

“That’s painful to hear because almost every family qualifies for financial aid,” Boucher says. “It’s not all need-based. There are a lot of scholarships and merit-based scholarships a school might grant you, but you have to fill out a FAFSA for a school to qualify for them.” So, even if you don’t think you would qualify, there are other scholarships and monies out there.

2) They Wait too Long

To file for FAFSA, it requires the student to list the college they will be attending. The problem with this is, many students don’t know what college they’ll be attending yet. This can be a decision that takes time, especially if they haven’t even applied yet. The delay can cause problems with losing aid.

“All you have to have on the FAFSA is one college listed,” Kantrowitz says. “It should be an in-state public college because some of the states will only consider you for a state grant if an in-state public college is listed on the FAFSA.”

Ilhan Omar Says Wall Street Should Pay All $1.6 Trillion in Student Debt

Politics

The Democrats appear to continue being in lockstep on what we should be doing about student debt. U.S. citizens currently owe $1.6 trillion dollars. Bernie Sanders recently tweeted that going to college isn’t a crime, so we should get rid of the costs and debts associated with it. Ilhan Omar appears to agree with him. She also calls for Wall Street to handle the problem.

“As someone who’s part of the debt generation, I wanted to make sure that we were creating a proposal that would alleviate the kind of stress that people are dealing with,” the 37-year-old Democrat from Minnesota said. According to her, the process would be easy. Add a tax to every transaction and the money would accumulate rapidly.

“We had the opportunity to bail out Wall Street, and now Wall Street gets the opportunity to bail out the American people,” Omar said. To her, it doesn’t matter if someone is wealthy and able to pay back their loans. Everyone would get forgiveness. The full $1.6 trillion in student debt would be paid off. Both sides of the political aisle appear to disagree about the process.

Student Debt and the Economy

Sanders says a small tax on Wall Street transactions would raise $2.4 trillion in about ten years. The CBO, who often looks into these matters, hasn’t backed up whether that’s true or not. He still believes it’s essential to try. Regardless of what party you’re a part of, any kind of massive debt like this hurts the economy.

“This debt isn’t a rich-person problem,” she said. “Trump and Trump’s children are not benefiting from this cancellation. They don’t carry student debt. Most of the people who carry student debt are the poor and the middle class.”

There is a lot of truth to this. It’s mostly the lower- and middle-class people struggling to pay off their student debt. Many recent surveys found that millennials in particular were putting of making many major life decisions. They were still living at home, waiting to get married and start a family, and even not buying the things other generations got to buy.

This does have a large cumulative impact on the economy. By wiping away this debt, it makes life so much easier for the 44 million who have student debt. They then have more money in their pocket, which they will spend. This could be a massive spark the economy needs to keep it going strong.
